Conformal coating has become a necessary and vital process for electronic manufacturers, reliable conformal coating delivers a more protected circuit board. The conformal coating process consists of the printed circuit board being “covered” in a protective coating of a standard 100 to 200 μm1 thickness. This coating protects the board from natural elements such as dust, dirt, moisture, and even fluctuating temperatures. Some coatings have insulating properties that can help protect the board from electrical breakdowns.

 

Usually these coatings are acrylic or silicone based, but chemical hybrid coatings are on the rise and the demand for these coatings to be used in the electronic manufacturing process is increasing – these hybrid coatings have fewer volatile organic components (VOC) but their adhesive power is not that of the solvent based coatings.

 

Conformal coatings are usually used when the circuit board in question needs to perform in highly reliable conditions, such as military and aerospace or automotive industries. These electronic apparatuses need to be resistant to environmental elements as mentioned above, they usually perform safety-relevant tasks.

 

Conformal coating is an ongoing development and with every individual industry the development continues, some examples include electronic systems being used in vehicles or alternative energy sources, such as solar panels and wind turbines, which are exposed to environmental elements such as wind, water, humidity and temperatures that can cause components to oxidize and damage.
